The Journey

What this tour
is really like

Gaya is where Hindu families come to complete the last obligation to their parents. The pind daan at Vishnupad, on the banks of the Falgu, is said to release the ancestors, and the Gayapal priests who conduct it have kept family registers going back generations. It is a rite people fly across the world for, and it is not a thing to organise on arrival.

We handle the priest, the samagri, the sequence and the timing, so the family only has to be present. Thirteen kilometres down the road sits Bodhgaya and the Mahabodhi Temple, which most travellers visit on the same trip - two entirely different relationships with the same small stretch of Bihar, in three days.

  • Pind daan arranged end to end, samagri included
  • A Gayapal priest who explains each step
  • Mahabodhi Temple at dusk on the same trip
Day By Day

The plan, hour by hour

Pickup at Gaya airport or junction and check-in at Bodhgaya. In the afternoon we meet your Gayapal priest, confirm the family details and the sankalp, and walk through exactly what tomorrow involves. Evening free at the Mahabodhi complex.

Dinner Night in Bodhgaya

An early start for the rites at Vishnupad Temple, the Falgu river bank and Akshayavat, in the prescribed order, with all samagri arranged in advance. The ritual usually runs three to four hours. The afternoon is left completely free.

Breakfast Night in Bodhgaya

The Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi tree in the morning light, the Great Buddha statue and one or two of the international monasteries, then a drop to the airport or station.

Breakfast Departure day

This is how the tour usually runs, not a contract. Every itinerary is rewritten around your dates, your pace and your group — tell us what you want to change and we will rebuild it.

Questions

About this
tour

Anything we have not covered? Message us and a planner in Varanasi will reply, usually within the hour.

No. Pitru Paksha is the traditional fortnight and the town is at its fullest then, but pind daan is performed at Gaya throughout the year and a quieter month makes for a calmer ceremony.

Very little. White or unstitched cotton clothing for the person performing the rite, and the names and gotra of the ancestors being honoured. All samagri is arranged by us.

Three to four hours for the standard pind daan at the three main points. The extended sixteen-day rite is a different undertaking - ask us and we will plan it properly.

Yes. Many families now have daughters conduct the rites, and the Gayapal priests we work with perform them without objection.
