The forest years, walked rather than read
Of the fourteen years Rama spent in exile, the Ramayana places eleven of them here. Chitrakoot is not a monument town - it is a landscape with a story attached to almost every rock, and the pilgrims who walk it treat the whole valley as one continuous temple.
The centre of it is Kamadgiri, the hill that is itself the deity. Pilgrims walk a five-kilometre barefoot circuit around its base, past shrines, monkeys and tea stalls, usually starting before sunrise. It is the best hour of the trip and, for most travellers, the reason they remember Chitrakoot better than places with far more famous temples.

Message UsNot at all. It is the highlight for most travellers, but the circuit is flat and five kilometres long, so anyone who would rather skip it can drive to Bharat Milap and Mukharbind directly and meet the group there.
Pilgrims do, and the paved path is maintained for it. If you would rather not, socks are accepted on most of the route and nobody will trouble you about it.
Ankle to knee deep in the second cave, more after heavy rain. Wear shorts or clothes you can roll up, and carry sandals with grip - the rock is slick.
