The Place

Why travellers come to
Prayagraj

Prayagraj exists because of a meeting point. The brown Ganga and the green Yamuna arrive from different directions and run side by side for a stretch before they mix, and Hindu tradition adds a third, invisible river - the Saraswati - to the confluence.

Outside Kumbh years the Sangam is surprisingly calm: a short boat ride, a bamboo platform in the middle of the water, and pandas performing rituals for families who have come from across the country. The city itself carries a second history too, as the Nehru family home and a centre of the independence movement.

The places we always
take you in Prayagraj

01

Triveni Sangam

The confluence itself, reached by a twenty-minute boat ride from Saraswati Ghat.

02

Bade Hanuman Mandir

A rare reclining Hanuman idol, partly below ground level and submerged by the Ganga each monsoon.

03

Akshayavat & Patalpuri

The immortal banyan inside the Allahabad Fort, reopened to visitors in recent years.

04

Anand Bhawan

The Nehru family mansion, now a museum with the rooms preserved as they were.

05

Allahabad University

Colonial-era architecture and the campus that shaped much of twentieth-century Indian politics.

06

Magh Mela grounds

The seasonal tent city on the sand flats, set up every January even in non-Kumbh years.

Practical notes
from our guides

Small things that change how a day goes. Our team updates these after every season.

  1. Agree the boat fare before you board, or let us book it - rates are fixed per boat, not per person.

  2. Carry a change of clothes if you plan to bathe at the Sangam.

  3. Anand Bhawan is closed on Mondays.

  4. During Kumbh, vehicles stop several kilometres from the ghats. Expect to walk and plan for it.
