Why travellers come to
Mathura

Mathura and Vrindavan are really one destination twelve kilometres apart - the city where Krishna was born and the town where he grew up. Between them sit some four thousand temples, from marble halls that opened last decade to courtyard shrines that have not changed in four hundred years.

Come for Janmashtami or Holi and you will meet the place at full volume. Come in November and you will find a slower town of kirtan, widows' ashrams, parikrama paths and the Yamuna moving quietly past the ghats at Vishram.

Must See

The places we always
take you in Mathura

01

Krishna Janmabhoomi

The prison cell marked as Krishna's birthplace, at the centre of a heavily guarded temple complex.

02

Banke Bihari, Vrindavan

The most loved temple in Braj, where the curtain is drawn every few minutes rather than left open.

03

Prem Mandir

A white marble temple lit in changing colours after dark, set in landscaped gardens.

04

Vishram Ghat

The main Yamuna ghat in Mathura, with an evening aarti and rows of turtles in the shallows.

05

Govardhan Hill

A twenty-one kilometre parikrama that pilgrims walk barefoot, often overnight.

06

Barsana & Nandgaon

Radha's village and Krishna's, and the setting for the famous Lathmar Holi.

Good To Know

Practical notes
from our guides

Small things that change how a day goes. Our team updates these after every season.

  1. Banke Bihari gets extremely crowded; go at opening time and keep valuables zipped away.

  2. Monkeys around Vrindavan will take glasses and phones. Hold them firmly.

  3. Most temples do not allow leather items or photography inside.

  4. For Holi, book four to six months ahead - the whole of Braj sells out.
