The Place

Why travellers come to
Ayodhya

Ayodhya has changed more in the last three years than in the previous three hundred. The Ram Mandir has reshaped the city - wide new approach roads, a restored riverfront at Ram Ki Paidi, and a stream of visitors that runs all year rather than only at festivals.

What has not changed is the pace once you step away from the temple. The Saryu still moves slowly past the ghats, the aarti at Nayaghat still draws a local crowd rather than a tourist one, and Hanuman Garhi still asks you to climb seventy-six steps before it lets you in.

Must See

The places we always
take you in Ayodhya

01

Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir

The main darshan, best attempted early morning or late afternoon when the queues are shortest.

02

Hanuman Garhi

A fort-like temple on a mound in the middle of town, and traditionally the first stop before the Ram Mandir.

03

Ram Ki Paidi

Terraced ghats on the Saryu, floodlit at night and the best place in the city to simply sit.

04

Saryu aarti at Nayaghat

Smaller and quieter than the Varanasi aarti, held every evening at sunset.

05

Kanak Bhawan

A richly decorated temple said to have been Sita's palace, with some of the finest idol work in the city.

06

Lata Mangeshkar Chowk

The giant veena sculpture at the Ram Katha Park entrance, a favourite evening gathering point.

A Sample Plan

How a Ayodhya trip
usually unfolds

1
Day 1

Arrive & the Saryu at dusk

Drive or train in, check in, then Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan in the late afternoon, ending at the Saryu aarti at Nayaghat.

2
Day 2

Ram Mandir darshan

Early darshan at the Ram Janmabhoomi temple, then Ram Ki Paidi and Lata Chowk before lunch and onward travel.

3
Add a day

Extend to Prayagraj

Most travellers pair Ayodhya with the Sangam at Prayagraj, three and a half hours away by road.

Every itinerary is rewritten around your dates, your pace and your group. This is a starting point, not a fixed package.

Saryu boat ride

Twenty minutes on the water at sunset, with the ghats lighting up behind you.

Ram Leela at Ram Katha Park

Open-air performances through the winter season and around Ram Navami.

Deepotsav

The Diwali-eve lamp lighting on the ghats - hundreds of thousands of diyas in one evening.

Awadhi vegetarian food

Ayodhya is strictly satvik. The thalis near Ram Path are excellent and very cheap.

Good To Know

Practical notes
from our guides

Small things that change how a day goes. Our team updates these after every season.

  1. Leather items - belts, wallets, bags - are not permitted inside the Ram Mandir complex.

  2. Mobile phones must be deposited before darshan; carry as little as possible.

  3. Book hotels early for Ram Navami, Deepotsav and the winter weekends; the city fills completely.

  4. Ayodhya is a no-alcohol, pure-vegetarian city. Plan meals accordingly.

Questions

About travelling
to Ayodhya

Anything we have not covered? Message us and a planner in Varanasi will reply, usually within the hour.

General darshan is free and needs no pass. Aarti passes are limited and issued by the trust; we apply on your behalf as soon as your dates are confirmed.

Between forty minutes and three hours depending on the day. Weekday mornings are fastest; weekends and festival dates are slowest.

It is five hours each way, so a day trip means eleven hours in a car. We strongly recommend one night in Ayodhya instead.
